How to Vet a Chinese Knitwear Manufacturer: 8 Questions to Ask

Choosing a knitwear manufacturer in China is mostly a filtering problem. There are a very large number of suppliers, many of them competent, some of them not, and a meaningful number that are trading companies presenting themselves as factories. The difference between a good outcome and an expensive one is usually decided before the first order, in the questions you ask.

Here are eight questions that separate suppliers quickly, along with what a good answer sounds like.

1. Are You a Factory or a Trading Company?

Both can work, but you need to know which you are dealing with. A trading company adds a margin and a communication layer; in exchange it may offer broader sourcing and better English. A factory gives you direct control and usually better pricing, but only for what it actually makes.

How to verify: ask for the business licence and check the registered business scope. Ask for unedited photos or a video walk-through of the production floor, not a marketing reel. Ask which processes are done in-house and which are outsourced — nobody does everything, and a supplier who claims to is not being straight with you.

2. What Certifications Do You Hold?

For European and North American buyers, social compliance auditing is usually non-negotiable. amfori BSCI and SEDEX are the common frameworks. ISO 9001 covers quality management systems. Product-level certifications like OEKO-TEX apply to materials.

How to verify: ask for the certificate and check the expiry date and the exact legal entity named on it. A certificate belonging to a sister company or an expired audit is a real problem when your own customer asks for documentation. Giborn Apparel is audited under amfori BSCI and certified to ISO 9001:2015 for knitted and woven garment production — both certificates are published in full on our about page so you can check the entity and dates yourself.

3. What Is Your Actual Capacity?

Ask for monthly output in pieces for products like yours, the number of production lines, and worker headcount. Then ask what percentage of that capacity is already committed. A factory running at 95% capacity will take your order and then deprioritise it when a larger client calls.

A good answer is specific and includes the constraint. “About 300,000 pieces a month across four factories, currently around 70% committed, and knit tops are our fastest line” tells you more than any capability brochure.

4. Walk Me Through Your Quality Control Process

This is the most revealing question on the list. A weak supplier says “we have strict quality control”. A strong one describes named stages with pass criteria.

What to listen for: incoming material inspection, fabric inspection with a defined method such as the four-point system, in-line checks with first-piece approval, final garment inspection against the approved sample, and a statistical AQL audit before shipment. Ask what happens when a batch fails, and who decides.

5. What Are Your Sampling and Production Lead Times?

Ask for ranges rather than a single number, and ask what drives the variation. Realistic answers for knitwear are roughly 5–15 days for sampling, 15–30 days for small batches and 30–60 days for standard bulk.

Warning sign: a supplier who quotes dramatically shorter times than everyone else. Either they are not counting fabric preparation, or they intend to skip steps. Both show up later.

6. What Is Your MOQ, and How Flexible Is It?

MOQ is often quoted as a hard number and is more negotiable than it appears, particularly across multiple styles sharing a fabric base. What you want to understand is why the minimum exists — usually fabric mill minimums or line setup cost. A supplier who can explain the reason can usually find a structure that works.

Warning sign: a supplier who will accept any quantity without discussion. Very low minimums with no explanation often mean the order will be brokered to a smaller workshop you never see.

7. Who Will I Actually Communicate With?

Ask for a named contact, their role, their working hours and their response time. Then ask what happens when that person is unavailable.

Communication quality is consistently what long-term clients cite as the deciding factor, and it is the easiest thing to test cheaply: send a moderately detailed technical question during your evaluation and see how long the answer takes and whether it actually addresses what you asked.

8. Can You Show Me Comparable Work?

Ask for products similar to yours in construction and price point — not a portfolio of everything they have ever made. Ask for a paid sample of an existing style before committing to development. A hundred dollars spent on a sample is the cheapest supplier audit available.

What to check: stitch consistency, seam finishing on the inside, label quality, measurement accuracy against whatever spec they supplied, and how the fabric behaves after one wash.

Putting It Together

Run all eight questions with three or four suppliers. You are not looking for perfect scores — you are looking for specific answers, acknowledged limitations and consistency between what they say and what the documents show. A supplier who says “we do not do that well, but we do this well” is usually more reliable than one who says yes to everything.

If you want to run these questions against us, our manufacturing page answers four, five and part of one in detail, and our FAQ page covers capacity, MOQ and lead time.
